More Than Stripes: KOK Kikoi Workshop Fosters Eco-Conscious Designers

On July 17th, the Mungo Mill welcomed 16 eco-conscious students from Crags Primary School on a sustainable fashion journey! Through a hands-on workshop, they learned how textiles are made while designing and weaving their own colorful, reusable kikoi. The most impactful design will be produced and sold sustainably, inspiring eco-friendly choices for all.

Wear change: Mungo’s Kids of Kurland Kikoi funds a teacher’s salary

Beyond weaving creativity, the Mungo KOK Kikoi empowers change! Profits from this sustainable, student-designed masterpiece will weave their magic into Kids of Kurland, a local charity nurturing the Kurland community since 2001. Each Mungo KOK Kikoi sold means funding one teacher’s entire salary for a year, directly impacting young lives and building futures bright with opportunity. By choosing this unique kikoi, you’re not just getting a vibrant statement piece, you’re actively investing in education and a brighter future for the Kurland community.

I learned that technology can be used in a lot of different ways – for example making clothes. I chose the colours for my kikoi by thinking about the rainbow, and what it represents. I love what different colours can make you feel. I called my kikoi ‘Rainbow Nation.’ – Cruywadon Daniels

From loom to loom: Unveiling sustainable practices

The Mungo Kids of Kurland Kikoi workshop kicked off with a journey through sustainability. Weaving supervisor Nicolette took the young minds on a behind-the-scenes tour, revealing the magic of fabric creation. They peeked into the rhythmic dance of the shuttle and weft, learned about diverse Mungo fabrics, witnessed the meticulous inspection process, and even explored the Cut, Make, and Trim (CMT) operation – a glimpse into the responsible garment lifecycle.

My favourite part was looking at the old machines. I learned about how the different machines work and how to make colourful cloths. I chose my favourite colours for my design. – Llu-Esha Gysman

Coloring a sustainable future: Creativity with purpose

Guided by designer Lenore, the workshop then blossomed into a vibrant design session. Kids explored the art of color theory, understanding how dyes breathe life into yarn and how the color wheel orchestrates harmony. Inspired by magazines and guided by Lenore’s wisdom, they embarked on a personal mission: designing their own unique kikoi stripes, each infused with individuality and purpose. From the simulations, a winning design was chosen, put into production at our mill and sold in aid of the Kids of Kurland foundation. See the ‘Kids of Kurland Kikoi’ here.

I learned a lot of things about machines. And that you can do anything with colours. My design was inspired by a garden. I first thought about the garden and then chose my colours – Carlin Minnaar
