More Than Stripes: KOK Kikoi Workshop Fosters Eco-Conscious Designers
Each year, Mungo conducts a textile design workshop with the students, introducing them to the traditional art of weaving and the intricacies of creating a marketable product. The students have the opportunity to unleash their creativity and express themselves through their designs, all while gaining valuable skills and knowledge.
The winning design is then selected and translated into a beautiful kikoi, a traditional Kenyan garment. These kikois are then sold by Mungo, with all proceeds going back to the Crags Primary School. This not only provides much-needed financial support for the school, but also instills a sense of pride and accomplishment in the students who see their designs come to life.
The 2021 winning design, named “Yanga,” was created by Yongama Madikizela. Her design was inspired by the vibrant colors and patterns of her community, and it represents the hope and resilience of the children of Kurland.
The Kids of Kurland Kikoi project is a shining example of how businesses can partner with communities to create positive change. By empowering students and investing in their education, Mungo is helping to build a brighter future for the children of South Africa.
